He knows deserts, surveillance, and the sick arithmetic of cartel power. But when the system folds – when his own government slams shut the case file with a muttered No jurisdiction – Jack goes dark.
South of the border, this isn't about cuffs or warrants. It's about a hunting knife strapped to his calf, a stolen Glock with serial numbers filed raw, and the names Rigo and Eladio burning like a brand behind his eyes. He moves through Nogales' claustrophobic colonias and the stark, sunbaked ranchlands where cartel scouts monitor the roads with antique binos and AKs.
He’s not alone. A disgraced Mexican federale, Luz Mendoza, finds him first – her brother, an anti-cartel journalist, disappeared after exposing Eladio's oil pipeline theft scheme. There’s also Coyote, a wiry pollero who smuggles migrants north but draws the line at Vega’s fentanyl shipments. An uneven alliance forms in the shadows. They call themselves Border Hunters – not for glory, but because they stalk the liminal space between law and vengeance, between nations that have failed them.
Their war isn’t clean. Safe houses smell of sweat and gun oil. Intel comes from terrified street kids paid in crumpled pesos. Every ambush risks sparking a war with the entire Vega cartel. And Jack’s realizing Rigo was just a symptom – Eladio’s empire, with its army of sicarios and paid judges, is the cancer.
The trap springs at a crumbling hacienda near the Río Sonora. Eladio’s men use machetes, not rifles – quieter, slower. But Jack? He’s prepared. Tripwired C4 buried in the arroyo. Tracer rounds lighting up the sandstone cliffs. When he finally corners Rigo in a bloodstained pantry, the kid’s whimpering about orders, about family duty. Jack remembers Dex’s laugh, ragged from too many cigarettes. The gunshot doesn’t echo. It’s swallowed by the desert.
